He’s also committed officer in charge of construction, but that is the Maryland Naval Facilities Logistics Center. Report one Enemy and that in fact, mid Atlantic his leadership is essential to the continued success of the world’s greatest navy. We’re truly fortunate to have him here today to share his thoughts. Ladies and gentlemen, please join me and welcome our guest of honor today, we’re Admiral john Corcoran. Yeah, well, good morning to everyone out there. They told me that I had a pause after saying good morning, hear something about. So it’s great to be back in new ports and when I say to be back in Newport, I come here regularly to visit the war college and participating in some war games. Um, but I really never branch out to this part of the area when during my visits And it’s actually over 30 years ago. That first step on board here in new ports and some things never change. I actually went through the surface warfare basis school in the building right behind us called Callahan Hall. Um, I’m amazed as a civil engineer, that building is still standing and it’s still operating, but let let it be known that the navy does have some legacies in its facilities. Uh Captain Alcorn, I wanna thank you for inviting me to speak. It is truly a high honor Part of the graduating class of 0 9-2 first. I’d like to recognize the class officers. Class, Chief petty officers, the gunnery sergeants, the academic instructors, the drill instructors, your collective guidance adventures, Fairmont, to the professional development of hundreds of candidates that go through the doors here at this university. Thank you for your unyielding commitment to development of our future and brought for pursuing excellence. Second, I’d like to thank those who make these ceremonies meaningful and patriotic. The sailors in front of me from the Newport’s band. You sounded great. Uh, we really enjoyed having you here. It does inspire us. We have a few flag officers, my fellow Flag officers and some distinguished guests that were mentioned uh, here earlier, but I still would like to recognize them. Admiral Ed and I are you here? Can, can you stand, they said you were in uniform, sir. Can you please take a look at that? That is what that is. Uh, It is, I’m impressed sort of that you’re still wearing the uniform. You look great and thank you for being here. Also, Admiral Snyder who was here, I ran into him. He actually has a nephew that’s graduating. So I know you’re probably beaming with excitement and pride right now, but also Captain Ravindu Captain, Great shock Colonel Risner. And I thank Captain Wagman. Thank you for being here to join these new officers. That will be joining the fleet. And lastly, I’d like to recognize the parents of our graduates. Thank you for delivering to the Navy and to our nation. Such outstanding sons and daughters here and are graduating today. Since its founding, our nation has prospered because among every generation there are those who accept exhibit the best of humanity and given themselves without reserve. You raise up Children and young adults with a proper character and values to serve Today. Less than 1% of the nation’s population is both fit and willing to serve in the armed forces. This is a very, very small number has our Navy and our nation are profoundly indebted to you. So I would like everyone to join me in a round of applause to the parents that did such a tremendous job. As I mentioned, it’s an honor to be part of any commissioning ceremony on this occasion. I have a great interest in the message that I bring to you today. I recognize that as time passes in your lives and careers, the words that I offer will fade. But the underpinned value of today’s message should resonate with all of you as you set out of mobile proved to be a professionally challenging, personally rewarding and ever more critical to security of our shared American values. Knowing this, I pondered what would be simple, yes, steeped in tradition and what you would remember And I came up with one word and that word is leadership. Leadership is why all of you are here and why you signed up for this Crucible. It is the most rewarding an exasperating aspect of the work. But leading sailors and people is what we do embrace this opportunity and this tremendous responsibility, recall and apply the lessons you’ve learned throughout your life And over the past 12 weeks. Believe in your ability and be flexible in adapting and continue to learn regardless of your rank or your position as naval officers. It doesn’t matter where you came from, how you grew up or even less of your commissioning source, what does matter is that the moment that you take the oath, the weight of commission is immense. And binding you will be expected to execute the responsibilities and authorities of this commission during the best of times and more importantly during the worst of times remember mission first sailors and people always, regardless of the community of which you are about to enter, you must master your craft and consistently were to have an innate understanding of the Navy and its mission, Every one of us plays a role in supporting and accomplishing the mission and you are responsible for connecting our sailors to that mission and motivating others to take action in support of it. The navy I joined is different than the navy I served in today. I entered during the Cold War where our foe was clearly known. I was involved in multiple operations during the global world terror era, where the face of the enemy was unknown and today we operate in the complex era. A strategic competition where the stakes are high and our pacing threat is china. In today’s environment, the expectations are clear and our leaders need us to move with agility and urgency to ensure we are ready. When not if our navy is called upon to meet the challenges that are near peer competitors represent to our nation. Admiral Burke said in 1961. In this modern world, the instruments of warfare are not solely for waging war. Far more importantly they are the means to controlling piece. Naval officers must therefore understand not only how to fight a war but how to use the tremendous power which they operate to sustain the world of liberty and justice without unleashing the powerful instruments of destruction and chaos that would have at their command. These words spoken 60 years ago, ring truer today than ever before. Be strong, be steady, be educated, be humble and most importantly be ready in the fleet. Each of you will be expected to be tactically proficient to drive change as we develop new technologies and tactics expand into new operational theaters and professionalize our navy at a pace not experienced in decades As a naval officer. All 89 of you have an individual responsibility to always be developing yourselves as leaders. So let me give you q tips, Focus on the three CS competence character and connection. These are the framework for leadership development, competence. Always seek to improve your tactical and technical skills get qualified. No every specific facet of your job, Your boss is counting on you to be that subject matter experts. Be relentless in the pursuit of excellence. It is okay to lean forward and make mistakes. You will be better learn from them, be the best naval officer and the best in your community. Never ever stop learning, it is critical to your professional growth and success. The formal training on the job training, coaching and mentoring that will happen embrace it. The self guided learning comes through your professional initiative That one is on, you character always perform above the Lonnie morally and ethically. Our Navy relies on trust and counts on people. The bond of trust is earned by respecting one another. It is your character that matters the most, live your core values, honor courage and commitment 24 7 and never think twice on ever compromising your principles, your character is your blue chip. Once you cash it in the recovery period is very, very long and the repercussions are very, very deep. Most leaders who get fired, get fired you to a character flaw or an error. Do not be that officer connections out reaching to your shipmates, your mentors, other services and other officers with other designators. Professional organizations and affinity groups is extremely valuable, harnessing the value of connections early in your career will pay dividends in the long run, regardless of how many years you serve or stay in connections amongst each other, improve our ability to anticipate our shipmates. Next move, your connections will energize you when your spirit is weak and motivate you to accomplish the missions when the times are tough by knowing and applying these three C’s of character, competence and connections and applying them. You will learn faster and build the resilience that leads to achieving success. In closing, I offer the words from Admiral Bull Halsey. There are no extraordinary people, just extraordinary circumstances that ordinary people are forced to deal with. It is up to you to be bold enough to use those extraordinary circumstances to bring out the extraordinary talent and those you lead and to find victory in the trials that you will face together. Always know that your service is a noble and patriotic calling and one that you should take extreme pride in. I welcome you to the fleet and safe travels as you depart. Newport and head to your first duty stations. God bless our Navy and God bless the United States of America.
