Proper Hand Washing

Master Sgt. Christine Lupacchino demonstrates the proper technique for washing your hands to prevent the spread of illnesses at the 104th Fighter Wing and in your home.

Paper Towels:
Get a paper towel to turn on the faucet.
Turn on faucet
Get paper towel ready for later
Apply a generous amount of soap to your hands
Wash hands thoroughly by rubbing together for at least 20 seconds – clean between fingers, and under nails. Sing “Happy Birthday” twice or “Stayin Alive” (BeeGees) or “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor)
1. Rub palms together up to the wrist
2. Rub with palms together while interlacing the fingers
3. Use the right fingers to clean around each left finger individually
4. Use left fingers to clean around each right finger individually
5. Clean under all fingernails
6. Rub right palm over left-back of hand
7. Rub left palm over right-back of the hand
8. Rinse hands, on both sides, up to the wrist
Take ready paper towels.
Dry hands and turn off the faucet with the paper towel

Reminder, hand sanitizer is not as effective as soap and water!
Hand sanitizer should only be used if soap and water are not available.
It cannot be used if hands are visibly soiled/dirty
It can only be used by adults and children older than 2 years of age
It must be between 60-90% of alcohol
