Gentleness | A Bible Class on the Works of the Flesh and the Fruit of the Spirit

The next grace Paul mentioned is gentleness. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law” (Gal 5:22–23).

The Greek term for gentleness means meekness and mildness. It occurs twelve times in the New testament.

  • “What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit?” (1 Cor 4:21).
  • “By the humility and gentleness of Christ, I appeal to you” (2 Cor 10:1).
  • Galatians 5:23.
  • “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love” (Eph 4:2).
  • “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Col 3:12).
  • “But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness” (1 Tim 6:11).
  • “Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth” (2 Tim 2:25).
  • “Remind the people . . . to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone” (Tit 3:1-2).
  • “Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you” (Js 1:21).
  • “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom” (Js 3:13).
  • “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect” (1 Pet 3:15).
