A New President, the Same Lord

President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. takes the oath of office

A New President, the Same Lord

On Wednesday, January 20, 2021, Joseph R. Biden, Jr., took the prescribed Constitutional oath of office and became the 46th President of the United States. I watched the ceremony, for I find our democratic republic a majestic blessing in divine providence. In that beautiful system, power transfers from one person to another; while Mr. Biden was assuming the Presidency, President Trump was leaving office. The Founding Fathers established a limited chief executive who only holds power for four years. Unless the Lord returns, four years from now the Chief Justice of the United States will administer the oath of office to the winner of the next Presidential election; only God knows who that will be.

Nearly 2000 years ago, Jesus Christ was enthroned in heaven. “Let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah” (Acts 2:36). “After [Jesus] had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven” (Heb 1:3).

The kingdom Jesus received from the Father never changes leaders; he himself reigns forever and ever. “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this” (Is 9:7). As Daniel watched, one like a son of man “was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed” (Dan 7:14).

No matter who sits in the Oval Office, my Lord sits on the throne at the right hand of the Majesty on high. My Lord reigns over all nations. My Lord reigns over all presidents. One day, President Biden, President Trump, and every President, king, and prince will stand before the throne of my Lord, the King of kings: “And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books” (Rev 20:12). You will be there, too, and you will confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord to the glory of God the Father (Phil 2:11), for our Lord reigns forever and ever.
