I’m Al Roker from the Today Show, and I have had a long association with the Coast Guard after we produced that show a Coast Guard, Alaska, Coast Guard, Pacific Northwest and Florida. I know just how hard, how dangerous and how exactly the work is that the coast is due, and so to the graduating class of 2020 we wish you the best and know that we can sleep better knowing that you are protecting our coastlines. Well, good evening or afternoon or wherever you’re at in this world. Kevin Costner, I was asked, Teoh, talk to your class on, uh to the people who supported you during this time and understanding the times that we’re living in. I I wasn’t sure how to go about this, but I I wrote down my thoughts for you in the 1st 1 that came to mind was that you’re graduating. In a time that has yet to be described in the history books, it’s unclear whether the a few words that will attempt to define this time do justice. To those who have actually lived in the sixties were a time of sex and rock and roll, they were a time of social and political unrest. Radical sixties was when I was just starting to think about what what my place in the world would look like and how I would fit. We were the generation that was supposed to make a difference and I found myself wondering back then if I would, I was uncertain. Perhaps a. So you think about yourselves and this ceremony today that you have that same feeling of being uncertain. No doubt today has very little resemblance to what you thought they would look like and how it might feel. Three months ago, we could not imagine We start out feeling bad for you on this day, maybe even saw it for ourselves. I’m sure the people who have loved you the most loved you. The longest must feel that now that may be having to watch. Hunched over a computer. Looking at a small screen somehow diminishes what you’ve accomplished and what you deserved. That it that it doesn’t honor you somehow. So how should we really think about this? I see it as a pattern. Almost a lesson for your life’s chosen war. Today is not what you thought it could be. There’s no parade. The stands were not full. There’s no band marching and you’re isolated. You are not being celebrated the way your loved ones that maybe dream for you. Instead, they are experiencing in real time with you the life of a swimmer. No one will be around you then no crowd to cheer you on. No band will play. No one will see what it took. No one will see. What was that wrist except your fellow swimmers and the souls you say who will never forget you in their greatest time of need your swimmers And that is all unique. But this classes as different as the times we’re living class of 2020 is already unique. You were the largest class to graduate. There are more women graduating in this class. Then in the history of the Coast Guard, you’re graduating in a time of great uncertainty. But unlike the rest of the world, you are certain you graduate today with confidence, with the strength, with the training that will be the difference and whether another human being lives or dies. Your parents are just now understanding, perhaps more than ever, that their little boy and their little girl have grown up to be the difference. And what happens at that moment, there’s little doubt that they saw these flashes of your characters. You grew, but to see you now and to know against the odds you have made it. The pride of all who love you must be unimaginable right now. Your sons and daughters know where they are going. They have accepted the challenge. They’re standing on their own yellow brick road. My dream of acting and directing has taken me around. The world has allowed me to play people of history, people who are smarter and braver than I ever waas. Did you even allow me to be a make believe swimmer of the movie The Guardian? I was proud to do it to play a fallen hero service of others, but it’s equally important for you to know that I never believed for one second. But I was one of that. I was strong or is dedicated or his brave. I never fooled myself into thinking that I had what it takes to be you, but I had what it takes to be a swimmer to do whatever is asked to go when no one else would. I just want to thank you today in advance for that work that he’ll do for the lives that you save for the difference that you will make. I’m proud of what you and the Coast Guard stand for And the best I can do today is to salute you and pray that God covers you as you meet each day. Thank you for giving me the honor to address the class of 2020. Hello. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2020. I’m Gary Sinese. I just wanted to take this moment to not only congratulate each and every one of you on the special day, but to thank you for answering the call to duty. Semper apparatus. Always ready. Ah phrase of significant meaning. As you embark on this new journey, you will always be ready. Always on duty, in defense of our country and our freedom. Ronald Reagan once said freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it to our Children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for protected and handed on for them to do the same. President Reagan was so right. The news today reminds us the great price defenders from each generation continue to pay to preserve the freedom and security of our great nation. Too often we can take for granted the fact that our freedom must be fought for sacrifice for and is provided through the service of a brave and courageous view Each and every one of you. Ladies and gentlemen, I know where my freedom comes from and I will never forget the sacrifices you make. I thank God each and every day for all of you who serve in Freedom’s defense. Thank you. Thank you, Thank you. I’m honored to be able to express my sincere gratitude to each of you and to say congratulations once again. Coast Guard Academy class of 2020. I’m a grateful American. God bless you all. And may God continue to bless our America, which you so faithfully served. De profundis the damos Be well, Be safe. Good luck. I salute you to the class of 2020. Soon you will enter the fleet is officers in the world’s greatest Coast Guard. First words of advice to the officers of Revenue Marine came from our services Founding father. They’re still relevant today. The academy class of 1963 thought so much of Hamilton’s letter of instructions that they m bronze them in the statue now adorning the whole of it bears his name in order to and I quote foster future generations understanding and appreciation of his perseverance and courageous leadership and be there for even better prepared than we to be always ready to serve country and humanity. As the chair of your alumni association’s board of directors, I am pleased to join your fellow alumni as we pass this charge from Secretary Hamilton through the long blue line and onto you as you prepare to stand the watch. The long line now presents Hamilton’s letter of instructions to the commanding officers of the Revenue Marine from Treasury Secretary. June 4th 17 91. As you are speedily to enter upon the duties of your station, it becomes proper briefly to point them up to you Accordingly. I send you a copy of the egg under which you have been appointed and which are contained your powers and the objects to which you are to attend. It may be observed generally the province of the revenue cutter to guard revenue laws from all infractions or breaches, either upon the coasts or within the base or upon the rivers and other waters of the United States. The officers of the revenue cutters are be deemed officers of the customs and enumerates certain powers with which they’re to be invested. It will be expected that a regular journal be kept in each cutter and then all occurrences relative to the execution of the laws in the conduct of all vessels, which come under their notice. He summarily noticed there in well, I recommend in the strongest terms to respective officers activity, vigilance and firmness. I feel no less solicitude that their temperament remarked by prudence, moderation in good temper. They will always get along with countryman Freeman and our patient of release Mark Dominick Spirit. They will their former Frank, with the most guarded circumspection from whatever has the semblance of haughtiness, rudeness or insult. If obstacles occurred, they will remember that they’re under the particular protection of the vase and that they could meet with nothing disagreeable in the execution of their duty, its reflection in regard to the good of the service. Well, forget at all times a spirit of irritation or resentment. They will endeavor to overcome difficulties by a cool and temperate, perseveres, their duty by address in moderation rather than by vehemence or violence, foregoing observations not dictated by any doubt of prudence off any of those to whom they are addressed thes have been selected so careful and attention to character as to afford the strongest assurance that their conduct will be that of good officers and good citizens. But in an affair so delicate and important, it has been judged most advisable to listen to the suggestions of caution rather than of confidence. I am your obedient servant, Alexander Hamilton, Secretary of the Treasury class of 2020. It has similarly been my honor to be your obedience. Congratulations. Okay, Good day, Ladies and gentlemen. Their success is a reflection of your commitment. Thank you so much. Today is truly unique and our coastguards history as we gather for this first ever virtual commencement and celebration of the largest and most diverse class in our 144 year history. 40 years ago tomorrow, the 1st 14 women graduates of C G A. Across the stage with the great class of 1980 the ushered in a new era for the academy, and we have truly evolved and today we will graduate 100 dedicated an amazing young women who will join the fleet as members of the great class of 2020. We continue to celebrate our rich diversity, a diversity of talents that will ensure we are better equipped to accomplish our mission for decades to come. Last year we graduated the largest number of Asian American Pacific Islanders, and this year we graduate the largest number of African Americans, Native Americans and Alaska natives, and we continue to graduate more Hispanic officers than ever before. The hard work to be more representative of the nation we serve is paying dividends. And while the demographic profile, this class is the most diverse ever. It’s the perspective, the skills and abilities each and every graduate brings to the service that makes them uniquely qualified to serve and lead during these unprecedented times. Together, the 248 members of the Class of 2020 represent the largest and most inclusive group of brave young Americans to ever take the oath to protect and defend all that is good and right about this country. And they are prepared to join a service that is ready, relevant and responsive to meet the needs of the nation class of 2020. I am confident you are ready to join the women and men of our service. The last 2.5 months of your academy journey have been like unlike anything we could have imagined from the cancellation of all spring sports and went there championships to the spring semesters conclusion at your kitchen table or on the couch in the family room and the loss of the traditional rights and privileges that come with being a first class cadet in the spring semester. We know there have been many lost opportunities and missed events, but what gives me great hope is that your reaction to these losses is in the face of adversity. You took time to reflect on what your academy experience is meant to you. You found creative and innovative ways to continue your studies while leading the regiment. You continue to demonstrate our core values and you took care of your people. You do this regardless of where you were and what your circumstances were. You found a way to make it work. Your resiliency and dedication is unprecedented, and because of this, you may be the most prepared instance we have ever graduated. Believe this, you are truly prepared to serve and the moments we now live today. You join the world’s greatest coast guard and you are ready to stand. Watch what you have accomplished over the past four years in the classroom, on the athletic fields and across the 103 acres and 295 feet of the bark eagle are aren’t on inspiring. You’re capstone. Projects and prowess on the athletic fields and in the arts have ensured our national prominence, and our Olympic qualifier and Fulbright scholar have collectively raised the bar for those that will follow in your footsteps. Carol Schultz I am confident the class of 2020 will not only continue the success they enjoyed here, but they will innovate and configure the Coast Guard to rise to the challenges of the 21st century. The soon to be officers we have assembled today across the nation and around the globe are prepared to serve. They know how to think the value, diversity. They work incredibly hard. They strive to be inclusive, They are disciplined and they certainly know how to have some fun. Sir, they understand what it means to be a 21st century Patriot admiral. They are ready to stand the next watch. But today is not just about our cadets. It’s also about parents, families, sponsor families and friends. All of you were with us today. You have done so much to encourage and support these graduates. You’ve helped motivate and sustain them over the past four years. And especially in these past couple of months, when your loved ones took up residence in their new Chase hall, we thoroughly appreciated your support and patience. As we’ve navigated these uncharted waters, it is through your guidance, your support and your love that each of them will be receiving their well our diploma and hard earned commission. Now, under different circumstances, I would ask each graduate to rise, turn and give you a round of applause. But since they’re sitting right there next to you, in most cases I will ask the class of 2020 to get up and give the loved ones around them. Ah, hug a handshake or a fist bump. Go ahead. We’ll wait. All right. Thank you. Well done. And congratulations, Mom and Dad. Secretary Wolf, I am so very pleased and so very proud. Report that the women and men of the class of 2020 have successfully completed the Coast Guard Academy 200 week program. They have individually and collectively excelled over these past four years, and they are indeed ready to take on the responsibilities of a commissioned officer in the United States Coast Guard. We, the faculty and staff, have the utmost confidence that they will live up to their class motto paper fund US v. Damos Through the depths we see, I am confident the class of 2020 will contribute to the efforts of our services and our department and our nation, as we see through the depths to assist our country to navigate through the challenging times in which we now live class of 2020. I now have the privilege to highlight several of our steam graduates First, I’d like to congratulate our five international cadets who have probably represented their nations while greatly enriching our academy and the corps of cadets. These graduates will return to their countries and served with distinction in their armed forces from the Federated States of Micronesia. Yuki Seuss I ah from the Republican Haiti Nyssa, Lindsay Pierre and Pierre Eric Wala from Mexico, Daniella Pimentel Espino and from the Philippines John Manual Buck A lot Ramos Thank you to all of our international partners who address their cadets and the pre ceremony video and for allowing your cadets to spend four years with us. I know yours proud of them as we are. Congratulations. Next, I’d like to introduce this year’s distinguished graduate. The distinguished graduate is a cadet who graduates with the highest military precedence average, which includes the academic, military and physical components. Off the 200 week program is with great pride that I present this year’s distinguished graduate first class Allah. Rick Stone, First Class Stone is from Ash for Ashburn, Virginia. His parents are Dr Ray Stone and Slavisa Stone. He is a proud government major. During his senior year, he was part of the International Law of Armed Conflict, Capstone Group, scheduled to compete in the 19th competition on the Love armed conflict and international humanitarian law for military academies and Sanremo, Italy earlier this spring. Despite rigorous preparation and countless hours of study of legal theory and complex geopolitical scenarios, this group was unable to attend this prestigious competition due to the Cove in 19 disruptions in the fall semester, First class Stone was the regimental chief of staff in this role. He led the regimental staff to coordinate the planning and execution of more than 15 high profile events and assisted in generating numerous initiatives that positively impacted the corps of cadets and the academy as a whole. First class Stone was the captain of the Coast Guard Academy Sandhurst military competition team, and upon graduation first class, Stone will depart to Charleston, South Carolina, to report on board the Coast Guard cutter James as a deck watch officer. First class Stone has deep Coast Guard roots. His great great uncle is Elmer Stone, the very first Coast Guard aviator. Elmer Stone graduated from the class of 1913 and just like Alec, he graduated the top of his class first class own, says after getting through the academy a big motivation and trying as hard as I did was that I had and still have to fill his shoes. Well, allergy, I have to say that so far you’re doing a fantastic job. It is my pleasure to introduce the distinguished graduate of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy Class of 2020 Cadet First Class Allah Rick Stone, Good Morning Secretary Wolf General Milley, Advil Schultz Radical Count Faculty and staff, Family and friends. Of course, the class of 2020. Thank you all for joining us to celebrate this incredible day and thank you for allowing me to speak to you today and represent my class. I’m truly honored and humbled. Classic 2020 Today marks the end of our 200 we journey to the Academy. The voice filled with book momentous triumphs in Storms University, June 26 2016. That hot, humid day in the first Portable the Canon feels like it occurred a lifetime ago and yet is vividly etched into our memories. Sorrow for friends and family were leaving behind both anxiety and excitement. What lay ahead weighed heavy in the pit of our stomachs quickly dispelled by the conference. Survival became a priority. Four years later, who among us could possibly have imagined would end like this Bill it, so long away to buy class was meant to be The beginning of the end meant that ushered in the last regular odyssey and signal to us that we had at last reached safe waters. And yes, what was supposed to be beginning waas the end, the last time together as a class in celebration of how far we have come. Although we have been robbed of our chance to reminisce together to gain some level of closure and come to terms with the fact that time the academy truly is finished, each of us has had ample time to reflect. During the past few months, we’ve heard it over and over again. Reframe. You don’t realize how special displaces so you leave Distance has a way of giving us perspective. And while the situation has been less than ideal, it has given us a unique opportunity to see just how special it is to be at the academy surrounded by friends just quite appropriate that as the class of 2020 should be given the opportunity to see the truth of this aphorism. With such clarity, let’s cherish members of the account regardless of what the future holds. They will always be ours, and they cannot be taken from us. Does that reflect on the past four years? I’m a little overwhelmed when I think of everything we’ve been through together as a class. We’ve had our rough patches Snapchat scandal pork last year, being the only classes in recent memory to have to adjust to mixed company contraceptions or something as silly as not being able to figure out how to do college properly in front of a whole continue to Cape May CC’s and, in case you haven’t realized were also want to be on Lee classes, not to get gangway ever. And yes, none of these events has come to the place so much so that we thought of her class at times is being I’m remarkable. Rather, the section being bad is, in my mind the highest praise that you proceed as a class. It is a testament or resilience in the face university in our ability to take failure in their stride with 2020 vision. We have been able to look beyond hardship and see what is truly important each other. Through trials and tribulations, both big and small. We have always remained a team family. Then we are more than the people that we have to live. There are people we can always depend on in times of struggle or hardship, the people that you cannot live without family or forever. Our bond is a class is so strong that even those shipmates were no longer with us in the academy have remained a part of our family, like John Wheatley and Julen Kowski, to name a few. As a class, we helps to pick one another up. When we felt as a family kept her eyes fixed on completion of the mission in achieving our goal to commission officers in the United States Coast Guard a warder through four years of blood, sweat and tears. Yes, I have seen experienced copious amounts of all three during my four years you and we did it together, helping and encouraging each other along the way. In light of this, nothing better classes so much. I’m remarkable as it is very remarkable as a class would not let hardship cloud our vision and make us lose sight of the good times that we’ve had. Which 1 20 vision. You stayed focused on the good in this place, and I’ve been quick to make the best of our time here. We’ve had amazing experiences like rain dance football games locates in our class dance of the Boston Aquarium, all made possible by the tireless efforts of dedicate individuals like Kayla Patton in our Fantastic Class Council, we come together in celebration of the Amazing Activity centre class like Joe Rodriguez Bins, Arlene Clair Early name A few. We’ve recognized the achievements of dedicated community service like dark currents. Did you know one of us has our own fond memories of moments with friends? In times of success and trying in as a class, we refused to let hardship struggle crowd of these moments, we’re just a few among millions of bright, talented young men and women graduated collars. This year, however, we have something that none of these other calls graduates have will ever have each other. Our time at the academy has forced the special bond among us. Well, we may not all be the best of friends. We know the quality of the people with whom we’re graduating it. Can you? Sure, But they will have our backs out in the fleet. And it’s not just because we’re all Coast Guardsman. It’s because we are the class of 2020 officers forced by the same fire and cast by the same movie. It’s because we all showed the dedicated part of ourselves to serving our country and people rather live lives. Personal comfort in game in this moment of celebration is important to remember that we’re graduating the academy during a time of great uncertainty. Less than 1/2 percent of U. S population served in the military and of those that do only a fraction receive the opportunity to service Commission officers reflect on this and realize the 15 orders opportunity that we have been given. We have equally waiting responsibilities to the American people. Let’s strive to really of the opportunity that we have looking every day to remain ready, relevant, responsive heating the words of our common animal Schultz. I know that we will rise to the occasion in the same way that we have while at the academy as we go our separate ways. And that’s the fleet. Remember that were part of something greater than their individual cells. We are a family. Regardless of how much distance separates us, we will always remain a family. I am proud to call myself your shipmate, and I am honored to share this two month journey with all of you. I know that our future classroom unions will be better tended. Maura fused with raw motion those of any other class. Because we are the class of 2020. I cannot wait to see what we will cheat out Athletes in American commerce easy knowing that we have to watch Go commencement, go classic 2020 and forever Go Bears. Thank you First last stone. For those inspiring and thoughtful words, your 2020 perspective on your class was spot on. I also have the privilege of recognizing this year’s honor graduate. The honor graduate is the class valedictorian is the cadet with the highest cumulative grade point average over the entire course of instruction. Beyond a graduate of the class of 2020 is Cadet first class Tobias Furrow, first last furl is an electrical engineering major and is also Captain of the offshore sailing team. Last summer, Toby conducted mentorship at M I Tease Lincoln Laboratories and for the past two years has worked on a directed study project to design and build a 1.5 meter autonomous sailboat. Continuing work on the project will result in an attempt at a two month transatlantic crossing from Cape Cod, Toe, Ireland, later this summer. Congratulations, Cadet Furrow. It is now my privilege to introduce the commandant of the Coast Guard, Admiral Karl L. Schultz. Admiral Schultz assumed the duties as the 26th commandant of the United States Coast Guard on June 1st 2018. He previously served from August 2016 to May 2018 as Commander Atlantic Area, where he was the operational commander for all Coast Guard missions spanning five Coast Guard districts and 40 states. A native of Connecticut, Admiral Schultz graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1983 earning a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering. In 1992 he was awarded a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Connecticut and in 2006 completed a one year national security fellowship at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Please welcome Admiral Schultz. Thanks, Jay. Congratulations, Class of 2020. Today you begin your journey is instance in the United States Coast Guard into our international cadets free from the Western Hemisphere representing Haiti in Mexico into from the Indo Pacific representing the Philippines in the Federated States of Micronesia Congratulations on receiving your commissions in your respective services Due to the current health crisis you are graduates are unable to celebrate your achievements in person. However, this in no way whatsoever diminishes the importance of solemnity of your graduation in the commissioning of our largest, most diverse class in history, including 100 women as a superintendent. Aforementioned, it was 40 year exalt almost to the day that the 1st 14 women graduated and were commissioned from this great institution. Three years later, my class the class of 1983 included the first African American and first Hispanic women graduates to begin. I want to recognize the many people in echo the superintendent’s words that supported our graduates during their academy for your voyage. Those family, friends, mentors, faculty staff, watching on live stream today Thank you for your love and your support and thanks to those parents that found their cadets back home again, and you’re feeding them here and getting ready here to have the fleet in the coming weeks. Class of 2020 You are our nation’s next generation of leaders. You’re entering commission service during a time that poses great challenge, but also a great opportunity. Today we operate in a complex, dynamic environment where rival powers elicit networks and competitive entities challenge the international order the Coast Guard serves across the globe, the safeguard the American people and our values. We support every geographic combatant commander from the Arabian Gulf to the Arctic to the Indo Pacific. We stand side by side with our Department of Homeland Security colleagues to protect our great nation. Do this service is unique roles and authorities as an armed force living within the department. Homeland Security. The class of 2020 has two distinguished guest speakers today who I’ll introduce a little bit later. Graduates. Over the past four years, you have come through together as a team showing your metal through academic professional development and athletic accomplishments, and along the way you’ve gained lifelong friends and forge countless memories that you will carry forward and now you’re academy voyage clearly was unique. You saw our men and women answer the call of the nation. You witnessed the Coast Guard’s historic ability, the leading crisis during the 2017 hurricane season when we saved over 12,000 lives. And over the four years we’ve averaged 200 metric tons of narcotics interdicted at sea, and we’ve upped our game as a global coast guard. And today we will watch you take your oath in the midst of a global pandemic that is rapidly transforming the world in ways we don’t yet fully understand. The last historic event to impact our academy commencement was World War two, when the 1942 through 1947 classes graduated early so they could immediately deploy in support of the war efforts. Those wartime classes experiences their worldview and the leadership philosophy they carried were molded by the clash of great powers in a war that impacted every single nation on earth. Just as your career trajectory as commissioned officers will be shaped by the current Covic 19 pandemic, the most consequential health crisis in our collective memories. As newly commissioned officers, you will face today’s crisis and the yet to German challenges that reside just over the horizon. With your many talents, your aptitude for service and skills, you could have certainly taken unease your path. But each of you chose a long and often difficult road to earn the title of Coast Guard officer, and soon you will step forward. We’ll watch you step forward. Since you did that with super tender yesterday, raise your right hand and take an oath of office. That oath is a very personal commitment to support and defend our constitution. Through that oath, you chose to serve an ideal something far bigger than yourself. You chose to stand in harm’s way to protect the fence. Save in shield the American people you chose to ensure the American dream never dies. Today class of 2020 you take your place in the long blue line, a vital link in the chain of Coast Guard men and women who have served before. Like the graduating class of World War Two, you will set the tone for generations of coastguards, men and women who will follow in your wake and you are ready as you’re comin on. I wholly believe in you, and I am confident in your ability to lead our dedicated men and women as you depart for your first units in the coming weeks. Remember your commitment to our core values of honor, respect and devotion to duty. Take care of your people. Our people challenge them and give them the space to succeed. It’s the forward leaning leader who will be ready, ready for future opportunities and responsibilities. So I charge you to learn from the past, ask for help and identify when and where to take warranted risk. It’s when the skies turn dark in the seas turned rough when other Sikhs save harbors. That’s when you’re a United States Coast guard are United States. Coast Guard goes to work, and that’s when our nation needs us the most. During those difficult times, embrace the sacred trust passed down from the founders of our great nation to you. Remember your oath of office. Remember our core values. Remember why you chose to serve well? There remains considerable uncertainty regarding this pandemic. There’s no one certainty whatsoever that amongst you graduating and commissioning today, stand our future Top service leaders in heroes that will emerge in crisis class of 2020. Welcome to the world’s best Coast Guard. Separate Peratis. Now it is my great privilege to introduce the video if a true patriot in military leader. The 20th chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley. General Milley is the nation’s highest ranking military officer in the principal military adviser to the president to the secretary of defense in the National Security Council prior to becoming chairman General Milley, Sir. For almost 40 years in the United States Army in numerous operational leadership assignments, culminating as a 39th Army chief of staff. As a service chief for the Coast Guard, I have the privilege of sitting alongside the Joint Chiefs of Staff supporting the Chairman in our national leadership. General Milley understands the sacrifices of military duty in everyday strives to empower and advance our national security objectives while ensuring our military readiness Today and tomorrow, we truly appreciate Chairman Millie support for the Coast Guard, every soldier, every sailor, airman and Marine and Coast Guardsmen serving in uniform Today. Ladies and gentlemen, General Milley Simple Peratis class of 2020 You’re almost there. This is General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Congratulations on your graduation from the United States Coast Guard Academy. You are indeed always ready, as your motto says. When you first entered the academy, you were swabs just entering the profession of arms. You came from all over the nation and all over the world from different backgrounds and cultures. I’m sure that when your boots first hit the deck, when your muscles ache during sea trials, when your intellect was stretched late into the night and saddle Ian McAllister Eaton Hall, you thought to yourself, What am I doing here? What does this profession mean to me? What does this profession mean to the country? Throughout your time at the academy, I’m sure that each and every single one of you came to the same conclusion. I’m sure that because you’re here, you hear on graduation day you committed to something bigger than yourself. You endured these last four years of pushing yourself physically and mentally be part of the fabric that holds this nation together. You have realized that it’s not just about you anymore. It’s about the classmates beside you, your family behind you, the Coast Guardsman. You will leave, but leading men and women is not just about confidence and expertise. It’s actually much more than the hard skills you picked up in the classroom. It’s all about character. It’s about those words printed in stone in the quarterback of Chase Hall. Honor, respect, devotion to duty. These words can’t be abstract for you. You need to understand for yourself what it means to be a servant leader, to be selfless, to have integrity, to be respectful, to live up to your core values of honor and duty in our profession, you must develop a bond of trust like no other occupation in the world. You have to trust each other. You have to trust the chain of command. You have to trust the petty officer’s in the semen, and they must trust you. And you have to earn that trust. You can’t walk out of a Ford operating base in Afghanistan unless you trusted everybody walking out with you, has your back knows what they’re doing? You don’t fly into a hurricane when no one else will pull survivors from the rooftops aboard Drug cartels semi Submersible. Without that trust, that bond of trust is not just to keep you and your teammates alive. But in fact, to keep the country alive, you see the American people they trust us, trust those of us in uniform to defend them. And we in turn, trust each other to accomplish the mission in the toughest conditions. Did you leave your homes your first duty assignment? Begin your journey. You will serve your country during a time of incredible challenge and increased complexity around the world. The world around us is becoming increasingly unpredictable and under increased strain. 75 years ago, with the end of World War Two the bloodiest war in human history, people throughout the world said never again. So they set up processes and policies laws in organizations such as NATO, United Nations, since the national Order was designed to do one thing to prevent World War Three to prevent another great power war. Today we talk about terms like great power competition, great car Warren conversations in classrooms so easily, but not so for the greatest generation. In the short period of 31 years, from 1914 to 1945 wars, one and two were fought among the great bars of the day, 150 million people around the world was slaughtered. Thondup. I had an opportunity in June last year, go to the 75th anniversary of the Normandy landings. I was talking to several the veterans and I leaned over to one of them in a wheelchair. I said to him simply, What is your lesson from World War Two? He looked up at me and tears came to his eyes and he said, General, never let it happen again. Never let it happen again. So this is where you come in. The class of 2020 is our task to ensure peace is maintained, and that is only done to our military strength and readiness. We’re now in the 75th year. The international order bestowed upon you and me and that order is under assault is being challenged. Reflect for a moment on what you have seen while you were here at the academy, an aggressive Russia intervening in Syria and other parts of Eastern Europe, assertive China, militarizing the South China Sea, continued tensions on the Korean Peninsula, blind behavior from Iran and its terrorist proxies. All of this and much more is happening just your four years here the cannon. And now it’s become ever more complicated with the introduction of the Corona 19 virus. So what does this mean to you? Is report to your first duty station so the Coast Guard is uniquely situated to respond. You are both of military service and a law enforcement organization. Diplomacy is your weapon. The Coast Guard operates with over 60 countries all over the world. Building partnerships and sustaining trust with allies allows you access to contested regions in a manner that is not viewed as escalate. You’re able to advance U. S national security interests by working with partner nations in the Indo Pacific, shaping international norms within the Arctic Council and supporting combatant commanders through theater security cooperation missions in Africa in the Middle East Coast Guard as the rare ability to work with our allies to build up governance structures. In our global comments, the high seas reestablished re cement the international order our parents and our grandparents worked so hard to construct. By modeling internationally recognised maritime behaviours and norms, you help prevent escalation. You help prevent great power war. Since your founding in 17 90 the Coast Guard has been there for every major war involving the United States and will always be there with your sister services. And today you’re going to join that long blue line. You’re about to take an oath on oath of allegiance, and in that oath you’re gonna swear that you were willing to suffer serious harm or death in the cause of freedom. You’re gonna swear to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, America against all enemies, foreign and domestic. You know there’s a 196 countries in the world and all of their militaries of all of those militaries. Of all of those countries, we United States military are the only one that swears an oath. Not your person or government or king or queen. Not your tribe or political party. No, we swear an oath to an idea. That’s a powerful idea, an idea that is brought down tyrannies and dictators. It’s an idea that Coast Guardsman Mel of honor recipient Douglas Monroe gave his life to protect. Has he rescued United States Marines on Guadalcanal? It is the same idea that Nate Bruckenthal paid the ultimate sacrifice for intercepting a suicide bomber attack in 2004. off the coast of Iraq. It’s an idea. Coast Guardsman like you throughout the last two centuries, have given their lives to protect him. It’s a simple idea, like all powerful ideas really are. So what is this idea? What is this idea that is embedded in this document that we call the United States Constitution? It’s simple idea that says that you and I, no matter who you are, with your mail, you’re female. No matter if you’re Catholic or Protestant, Muslim or Jew doesn’t matter what your religion is, or if you choose not to believe it all, it doesn’t matter if you’re black. You’re white, Asian or Indian. It doesn’t matter the color of your skin. It doesn’t matter how you identify. It doesn’t matter where you came from, what your country of origin is. It doesn’t matter what your last name is. Doesn’t matter if you’re rich, you’re poor famous, a common in this country in the United States. Under these colors of red, white and blue, every one of us, every single one of us are all born free and equal. We will rise or fall based on our knowledge, our skills and our attributes we’re gonna be judged by the content of our character. Nothing else matters. That is all it is. And that is the organizing principle of this great country called the United States of America. And that is what you were taking an oath to defend. And that is what you are willing to die for. That is what you inherited from those that came before you. And that is what you’re gonna pass on safely to the next generation. God bless every single one of you. We’re proud of you. And congratulations to the class of 2020 separate rocks. Thank you for those remarks, General Milley. I would now like to introduce first class Cadet Ross Coal Co. The president of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2020. It is a tradition to present the commencement speaker with a token of appreciation. First class cocoa will now present the Secretary of Homeland Security with the class gift. Mr. Secretary, we look forward to your remarks on behalf of the class of 2020. I would like to present you with this token of our appreciation. I hope you’re aware when you come visit my cutter, the Campbell and my other classmates. And before you, Thank you. First class Cadet Coal Co. Ladies and Gentlemen. It is now my distinct pleasure to introduce the video of a leader who truly embraces the Coast Guard’s enduring commitment to this great nation. The acting secretary of homeland security, the honorable Chad Wolf Secretary Wolf, with over 20 years of policy experience, has served in vital positions across the Department of Homeland Security. It is a privilege to work for a leader who knows what it takes to combat the vast threats facing our nation into unsightly lead and fully integrate the highly professional men and women that comprise the department Homeland Security team. We are truly grateful that we have a secretary, then advocates on our behalf and who fully appreciates all that. Our Coast Guard does the safeguard the nation’s security and prosperity. The Coast Guard signer to serve is one of the 22 components of the Department of Homeland Security. And as we seen during the recent global pandemic, DHS is more important today than ever before, together under the leadership of acting Secretary Wolf, the department, Homeland Security safeguards, the American people, our homeland in our values. Ladies and gentlemen, Secretary Wolf, Thank you for that kind introduction Admiral Schultz and good morning class of 2020. On behalf of your commander in Chief, Donald J. Trump. I congratulate you on this special day. And while I’m thrilled to join you virtually deeply regret that we cannot gather in person to celebrate your commencement ceremony. This ceremony is the culmination of four or more years of hard work that deserves to be celebrated with friends and family. A doubt when you were accepted to the academy, you thought you’d be at home far from Cadet Memorial Field, watching me speak to you from a laptop or smartphone during your graduation. You have all put in years of hard work and sacrifice worthy of a traditional Coast Guard academy graduation. However, the global health crisis prevents us from celebrating together, and I expect that you will find today’s world events both good and bad will impact each of you for the rest of your careers. Already. Understand that due to the necessary actions taken in response to the virus, you, your classmates in the class is junior to you, have missed out on several privileges and activities for example, major milestones. Each class celebrates to mark the successful completion of a school year and ascension to aim or senior rank taking advantage of gangway or a liberty. The ring dance for the second class cadets, civilian attire on liberty for third class in the fourth class missing out and carry on. That said, it would seem that the fourth class did catch a break, not having to bust the class embrace up for the last six weeks, the fourth class year. And while I’m sure it has been disappointing to miss out on these traditions, I’m confident that your morale remains high and you’re ready to join the fleet. You should also know that your country will always appreciate the sacrifices that you made to defend our nation. And speaking of appreciation, I’m quite confident that none of you have reached the stay alone. There has been a network of support that you have relied upon during these challenging four years. Your parents, siblings, extended family, friends and loved ones. Whoever they may be, they have all had a role insisting you and what is the end of the first chapter of your Coast Guard career and so I’m going to a pause and allow you a few seconds to think those who are around you throughout your journey. It’s frustrating is it may be the unorthodox situation in which we find ourselves today is emblematic of what you will all find when you’re on the front lines of defending this country, and that is the need to be prepared for the unexpected. You must be ready. Today. I’ll share with you a simple lesson and how you can apply to your future careers. Academy of Staff has worked hard to prepare you for your Coast Guard journey. I’m sure each of you are ready to put you have learned to the test, but whether you’re interdicting drug smugglers, 18 distressed vessel or deploying to the Arabian Gulf, you always encounter situations at sea they may not have expected. I’m sure the people have trained. You have shared many stories with you about the unexpected trials, encounters successes they’ve faced over the years while serving our country. Put simply, life is going to look a lot different out there than it did inside your classrooms at the academy. That is why I expect you to always keep learning. It’s the best way to ready yourself for unexpected challenges that lie ahead. Additionally, as you progress in your journey, it’s important you’re not afraid to take calculated risk and make mistakes along the way. Just remember to learn from them. Keep moving forward with the knowledge that you’ve gained. This will ultimately better prepare you for whatever challenges they face. Next, his officers, Your subordinates will look to you to make important decisions, and in many cases they will trust you with their lives. In turn, remember to take care of your people. Learn from them. Even the most junior must also be prepared to thrust to be thrust into leadership roles in which you will be expected to confidently take action. Even the most selfish, shirred, seasoned leaders we called upon to take charge of situations they did not initially see coming. These situations make you come sooner than you think. As long as you have prepared yourself mentally and physically, you will rise to the occasion. Remember to live up to the words recorded on the deck of the entrance to Chase Hall, who lives here. Rivers honor honors duty. Perhaps most importantly, remember why you dedicated yourselves to a career service. Remember why you joined the Coast Guard? How it’s unlike any other branch of the armed forces. As Coast Guard officers, you have the privilege of fulfilling one of the most unique mission sets of any military service. Whether you’re patrolling for smugglers on a cutter, expecting vessels as you protect US commerce or braving the storm, conducting search and rescue in an aircraft, your careers will be as diverse as they are rewarding. That said, your unique mission set brings with it a set of equally unique challenges. Must be ready to face head on the Coast Guard support of the whole of America responds to cope in 19 Pandemic. It’s a perfect example. Today, Coast Guard is working with local state National, an international partners to safeguard our nation from this global health crisis. For example, Coast Guard security teams escorted to mercy and comfort into the ports of Los Angeles in New York and late May and then protected them around the clock. During their stay, these ships and their crews help alleviate the strain the pandemic put on local medical resource is in both cities. Chris Card also safely and effectively oversaw the disembarkation of more than 200 50,000 cruise ship passengers from 120 vessels in U. S ports following the outbreak, a testament to your outstanding capabilities. Coast Guard members air embedded into components not only here in the department but also other federal departments As expert incident management leaders, these efforts have saved the lives of countless Americans. A few of your colleagues likely expected to be responding to the challenge of a global pandemic, but they have seen remarkable success because they prepared themselves for the unexpected. Going forward, you must learn from their example so that you could respond to the next national or global crisis. Beyond our national borders. We face many threats to our national and economic security that have forced our country to adjust. As the only military service in the Department of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard provides unique capabilities to address this challenge. A service you’re serving all seven continents, advancing homeland security, defense interest from the Arabian Gulf to the Arctic from Americans, inland waterways to the shores of Hawaii. Coast Guard will continue to advance our national security in this era of international competition, you must be ready to adjust to the new strategic paradigms, but preparing yourselves now, the challenges that will come as you protect US sovereignty. The Arctic in particular, will be an area of operation that would become synonymous with your generation of Coast Guardsman. Coast guard will be the face of U. S. Policy in this region as the global demands for commodities like energy, minerals, fisheries and trade routes intensifies more nations air looking to the Arctic for economic and geopolitical advantages, Russia and China are new. Our two newest here nations have made the Arctic and clear priority. As I speak to you today, they’re aggressively competing for shipping access, natural resource is and sovereign rights. The activities, actions, activities and actions taken fire near peer competitors add to the very real possibility of an attack vector across the Arctic. To protect our interests and ensure our influence in the polar regions, U. S Coast guard must be president incapable of operating with persistence in this harsh environment. This necessitates the demand for Coast Guard leadership as well as the ability to be flexible as we protect U. S interests in the region. Coast Guard operates our nation’s icebreaking fleet, consisting of just one heavy in one medium icebreaker. The Cutters Polar Star in Healy. Each of these vessels deploys toe high latitudes on an annual basis to uphold American access, national security and economic security in the polar regions. To meet our nation’s growing to meet needs, we’re building our first polar security cutter first modern heavy icebreaker to be built in the United States and 1/2 century. Additionally, the administration’s budget request for 2021 includes over 500 million to fund a second polar security cutter enough for two. Further support Your future missions is a maritime nation. Our economy. He’s never been Mawr. Interconnected to the global market, the US is fortunate to have one of the world’s largest systems of deepwater ports in inland waterways. We’re also one of the top 10 ship owning countries in the world, driving both U. S. And global prosperity. These attributes have allowed us to flourish economically, but they also bring with them certain vulnerabilities we must be ready to address. That is why I often say economic security is homeland security. I’m happy to say that the United States Coast Guard helps lead the way. We’re fortunate that the men and women of the Coast Guard work around the clock to keep our maritime transportation systems safe and efficient, safeguarding the marine industry and facilitating commerce, the critical daily mission that strengthens our economic security. You always your American shells remain stocked. Their vast energy needs are met with over 95% of the goods that we buy in America, arriving through sea ports, Coast Guard must remain keenly focused on this mission. Moving forward. Underlying everything that we do to meet our mission goals is an ongoing technological transformation. These advancements have enabled our country to operate with impressive efficiency but have also exposed us to inherent risk. Exploitation, misuse or simple failure of technology could not only derail are vital activities. It can also put our lives in danger. The quickly evolving cyber dinning is one of the most difficult economic and security challenges we face as a nation. The Coast Guard unique and broad authorities offer a variety of options in our united cyber efforts. This includes working with sisters, National Cybersecurity Communications, Integration Center to protect are critical national infrastructure. Today we see emerging vulnerability from increased cyber attacks targeting our ports the past year, coastguards new cyber protection team is deployed to cities like New Orleans to aid the inter governmental response to malicious cyber attacks. Fortunately, we have the ability to protect against these unprecedented threats. For example, Congress recently provided DHS certain counter drone authorities. Coast Guard has employed these authorities for the first time last year to protect over 130 world leaders gathered for the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. While the department as a whole has made great strides in cybersecurity, you all must be ready to take on increasingly complex challenges in this nation domain. One of the most complex and enduring challenges you must be ready to face is the threat posed by transnational criminal organizations, or TCS. Chris Card has a vital role in protecting our Southwest border against these organizations. This is often overlooked aspect of coastguards. Missions for your actions were helping in a surge capacity on the border. Patrolling and service of giant a south has a measurable impact. T CEOs collect billions of dollars annually while devastating American communities through criminal activities. The organization’s poison our communities with deadly drugs like heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. They put American lives in danger by trafficking people over our border. And they move you legal weapons used to kill innocent people. The violence, instability that perpetrate elevates the crisis that our southern border by driving thousands of vulnerable families from their homes. You were all in the front lines of this fight. Over the last four years, the Coast Guard has worked with our interagency international partners to intercept more than £2 million of uncut bolt cocaine destined for our streets. U S Coast Guard is just dropping these traffickers where they’re the most vulnerable at sea and in transit zones Well before they could be transported into the US, become nearly undetectable. You must be ready to continue to intercept these organizations as they continue find new ways of introducing dangerous drugs into American communities. And though I’ve only been your service secretary for a short period of time, I’ve seen the remarkable work you do on a daily basis. I’m confident as then we usher in a new decade filled with new and unexpected challenges. You all rise to the occasion. I envision a Coast Guard that continues to not only perform the missions it has dutifully executed for centuries, but simultaneously embraces the unique ones that lie before us is the class of 2020. You will usher the Coast Guard into a new phase of service for this country. Before I conclude, I want Teoh once again remind you so Let the unusual circumstances of today’s commencement serve as a reference point in your future careers. Just as we have adopted the ceremony today, the future you must be agile leaders who are ready to adjust based on unexpected circumstances. It’s no surprise that the Coast Guard’s motto is simple Peratis always ready, considering the unique mission sets you will be responsible for fulfilling. Know that as your service secretary will do everything in my power to support you along your journey and when you are faced with insurmountable odds that want you to remember this day also want you to remember your classmates. I want you to remember the struggles you faced together during your time at the Academy from swab summer to graduation. Are you perhaps at times thought that there is no way that you could make it, but how you ultimately succeeded today you arrive. At the end of the journey is cadets. We celebrate your graduation and commissioning as officers in United States Coast Guard. We also celebrate your new journey as you strike out in service to our nation as you head out to sea to sectors into flight training. You have your Coast Guard, brothers and sisters with you every step of the way. You must trust them. Rely on them. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help. This is the CEP sign of a true leader. You also have your DHS family standing firmly behind you. 240,000 strong. We face an increasingly complex and dynamic world in your nation. Needs you to be ready to take the lead. Could not be more proud to welcome you to the operational ranks of the Coast Guard into the Department of Homeland Security. I wish you all fair winds and following seas in the years to come. Congratulations, Class of 2020. On behalf of the academy, thank you, Secretary Wolf, for your service to this great nation.
