The U.S. Army in Japan Ground Self-Defense Force came together for exercise, Yama Sakura 77. Yama Sakura is the largest bilateral command post exercise between the U.S. Army and JGSDF. U.S. Army Japan Deputy Chief of Staff, Colonel Cory Delger spoke about the importance of the exercise.

The benefit of Yama Sakura is that you have an opportunity to really bring the warfighting staffs of the JGSDF, I think Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces and the U.S. Army together, training on some high level staff processes that exists at the operational and strategic level. So over the course of the last few weeks, U.S. Army’s first Corps and the JGSDF, Eastern Army have been working together, conducting some really difficult complex staff planning to get out some of the challenge that exist in the Pacific Region.

Eastern Army’s Colonel Takashi Kuroki, describes his own experience working with the U.S. Army. (speaks in foreign language) Yama Sakura provides both allies an opportunity to come together and strengthen an already solid partnership.

It underscores the commitment that the United States has with the alliance with Japan. And really, it’s an opportunity for the U.S. Army and the Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces to come together, hone our warfighting skills, work on interoperability and staff planning.
