(laughing) I’m just kidding, it was Labor Day. It is, after all, the most wonderful time of the year and hearts will be glowing when loved ones are near and in-laws are far, far away. Whatever traditions your family is looking forward to this season, it is beginning to look a lot like Christmas and tonight we hope that a few of our favorite things will help to make this the most wonderful time of the year. Happy holidays, everyone. I’m Col. Miles Caggins. Growing up as a kid I never imagined I’d spend three Christmases in Iraq, but here we are. It’s an honor to represent the coalition as we’re on an important mission to defeat the remnants of ISIS in Iraq and Syria. This Christmas, I’ll celebrate with my friends in camouflage but don’t worry about us, we’ll have a great time getting to know each other and I’m sure that Santa will bring us turkey and ham and all the dressings. Merry Christmas. (“Waltz of the Flowers” by Tchaikovsky) (audience applauding)

For the record, I really like my in-laws so I should’ve never used them as easy material for a quick joke. I’m sorry about that, honey. And to smooth things over I need to tell all of you that my wife is living proof that behind every successful husband is a surprised mother in law. (laughing) The holidays are all about connecting with family and friends and tonight we have a new way for you to connect with us at the Army Band. After the show go to our website US Army Band dot com, click on the connect with us button in the upper left hand corner, and there you can tell us all about what you thought about tonight’s program. And speaking of programs, when you’re on our website you’ll be able to find a digital version of our program as well. We look forward to hearing from you. For many years the US Army Chorus has been a signature part of our annual holiday show. And tonight, we feature them in a special presentation from the White House. Here is the Army Chorus performing a holiday greeting just for you, or in the words of that famous Broadway performer Bugs Bunny, here’s the boys of the chorus, we hope you like their show. (audience applauding) Me neither. Well if your neighborhood is like mine, there’s always that one family that goes full on Clark W Griswold and takes out a second mortgage to put enough lights on their house to make sure you can see it from the International Space Station. Well tonight, we’re gonna do a light show of our own and we’re gonna raise the bar so high the next time you drive by that guy’s house you can roll down the window and say I’ve seen better. (laughing) Now in all seriousness as you might suspect this number does contain a sequence of flashing lights which may affect audience members who are susceptible to photo sensitivities so please be aware of that. And now, without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, here is Wizards in Winter. (“Wizards in Winter” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra) (audience applauding)

Music has a long and important history in military life. The first recorded appearance of a military band in colonial America dates back to an artillery regiment founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1756. During the America Revolution, it was the beat of the drum, the sounding of the bugle, an echo of the fife, which helped to lead soldiers in battle and inspire the will to fight and win. Today the US Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps represents the soundtrack of the American story as they proudly carry on traditions that date back to the birth of our republic. At this time of year, Jewish communities around the world gather together to celebrate Hanukkah, which commemorates the Maccabees fight for religions freedom over 2,000 years ago. Known as the festival of lights, Hanukkah celebrates the miracle of a single day’s supply of oil which burned brightly for eight days and nights in the holy temple. These days Hanukkah is celebrated with food, family, gifts, games and of course eight candles, one for each night, shedding the sweet light that reminds us of days long ago. Yo, give it up for Santa Claus!

One more time for Santa in the house! That guy’s schedule this time of year is almost as crazy as mine. Alright, this is for the two guys I just saw in the back row that did not cheer for Santa, I cannot believe that. Okay look, you’re proud now, right? You know it’s all fun and games until you end up on the naughty list. You’re not getting a Baby Yoda this year, buddy. So cute, that thing. I meant to ask Santa for one. Actually I should go easy on you. I think probably they’re claustrophobic. I’ll wait. Thank you, thank you very much. (chuckling) Well no problem, everybody’s allowed to have their own flavor of holiday spirit and if Santa is too bland for you then I guess that means we just need to spice it up and I’m not talking about cinnamon and nutmeg. Initially these four soldiers were working as individuals until they were brought together by a request for a vocal quartet to sing the national anthem. From the first moments of their first rehearsal together it was clear that this new group had the potential to do something really special and this year they got a unique opportunity to spread their message to the world by appearing on a popular televised talent show. Take a look.

So what’s the name of the group?

Voices of Service. We’re using this platform to show what music can do as music therapy for service men and women who are coping with post traumatic stress and we just love what we do.

So what would you like to achieve by doing while on the show, tell me.

We want to achieve in spreading a message of love and hope for everyone in America who is coping with any challenge in life to show what music can do.

When I was deployed to Afghanistan I missed some holidays with family back home.
