Providing Comfort: The North Team

Members of the Canadian Armed forces assist a humanitarian mission. The hospital ship USNS Comfort is working with health and government partners in Central America, South America, and the Caribbean to provide care on the ship and at land-based medical sites, helping to relieve pressure on national healthcare systems, including those strained by an increase in cross-border migrants. Hi, I’m Major Ian Buckley, I’m an all maxillofacial surgeon out of Canadas. My role here on the ship is to work both in the OR, and in the med sites. We do some surgeries in the operating room, And then on the med sites we do some clinical work there including extractions, biopsies, Or other procedures on the med site. It’s been a great experience with regards to the partnership here. It’s great to meet all the different people from different nations that are coming in with the military, as well as, the non-governmental organizations. It’s been a really good sort of melting-pot with the skills. As far as adding to the mission, I think that we’ve been able to bring some enthusiasm. I know we’ll get two corporals. Corporal Harrison and Corporal Savage have enjoyed their experience very much, and they’ve brought some enthusiasm to the medical site, as well as in the sick bay. As far as skill sets, we brought in some different skills as well, to help with the partner nations and the U.S. Navy. As far as anything else to add, I guess it would be that the U.S. Navy has been incredibly welcoming of us Canadians, as well as, the other partner nations and ongoing governmental organizations. And I think that is fruitful to the mission’s success in having a variety of people join you guys on this mission of enduring promise.
