[Narrator] The U.S. won its first medal at the 2019 CISM Games in Wuhan, China. Army Staff Sergeant Max Nowry won bronze after three separate matches in the freestyle competition of the 57 kilogram weight class against wrestlers from all over the world. The daylong competition was intense, and at times heated, but the bigger purpose for the games was not lost on this military athlete.

I think sport brings a lot of peace, you know, especially when they took wrestling out of the Olympics and, you know, you got countries like Iran and USA, and Russia and China all working together to bring sports, you know, together, so I think sports is a big thing with bringing people together. Whether it’s, you know, it takes all the politics out of it and just, you know, going at it one on one and doing what you’re trained to do.

[Narrator] Staff Sergeant Nowry is assigned to the Army World Class Athletes Program. Next, he’ll begin training for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
