Sailors Participate in New Physical Readiness Test Events

A video showcasing Sailors participating in the new physical readiness test (PRT) events as part of Navy Physical Readiness Test Evaluation Phase II. Throughout the week, groups of volunteers performed exercises such as pushups, planks, 2k row and upright bike. This is the first of four planned evaluations around the fleet designed to set new performance standards and metrics for future physical readiness tests. When CNO announced that they wanted a forearm plank in replacement of curl ups and that they wanted to add a 2,000 meter, a 2K row as an alternative cardio assessment we were tasked with coming up with the developing the performance standard and the scoring metrics for this.

We are going to be having the sailors coming in and they’re going to be doing three different days of exercise. Getting used to the row on day one and introducing them to the Concept2 rower and working on their technique. Day two, they’re going to do the pushups, the forearm plank and then bikes. Day three, they’re going to come back and again do the pushups, the plank and then they’re going to do their second trial at the two-kilometer row as well as the 1.5 mile run.

I honestly think it’s really good that we’re trying to adapt over because everybody kind of recognized that doing 100 crunches isn’t representative of what we do every day. And it doesn’t necessarily get to the bottom of how fit everybody is. So, the fact that we’re trying to come up with new exercises that better represent what we do to improve the force is awesome.
