Waal River Crossing Commemoration – General Richard D. Clarke

Soldiers of the 82nd Airborne Division take part in a ceremony hosted by the city of Nijmegen, Netherlands. The ceremony is part of a series of commemoration events in honor of the 75th Anniversary of Operation Market Garden, the largest airborne operation in history which was aimed at liberating the Netherlands and gaining a foothold into Nazi Germany by crossing the Maas, Waal, and ultimately the Rhine River. Gen. Richard D. Clarke participated in the ceremony as a guest speaker and by laying a wreath at the memorial site. Gen. Clarke served as commander of 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division from 2002 to 2004 and of the 82nd Airborne Division from 2014 to 2016. He currently serves as the 12th commander of United States Special Operations Command at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida.
