The Testimony of John the Baptizer (John 1:19-28)

Why did John freely confess that he was not the Christ?

Why do you think the Jews sent the Levites to ask John his identity? In other words, why did the Jews not come themselves?

The Levites said, “We need to give an answer to those who sent us.” Why? What did they owe the Jews (Pharisees) who had sent them?

“What do you say about yourself?” The Levites had put words in John’s mouth, so to speak. They had asked him if he were the Christ, Elijah, or the Prophet. What might have caused them to change their tactics and allow John to answer for himself? If you were asked, “What do you say about yourself?” what would you say?

How did John make straight the paths of the Lord?

Since he wasn’t the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet, why did John baptize?

John baptized with water. Why?

Why did the Levites not know the One who was coming? Should they have known? Why or why not?

How was John not worthy to untie the sandal of the One who came after him?

This is the first passage where we find Bethany mentioned. What important role will Bethany play in the Gospel of John?
