Teach Sound Doctrine (Titus 2:1-10)

What accords with sound doctrine? How would Titus know what accords with sound doctrine? Why should Titus teach what accords with sound doctrine?

Paul gave Titus instructions for six classes of people (older men, older women, younger women, younger men, Titus himself, and slaves). Why might Paul list different Christian qualities for each group? In other words, why not just one long list that would include all four classes?

Why do older men need to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is sober-minded? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is dignified? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is self-controlled? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is sound in faith? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is sound in love? What are some of the characteristics of an older man who is sound in steadfastness?

Why did the older women need to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, and not slaves to much wine? What are some of the characteristics of an older woman who is reverent in behavior? What are some of the characteristics of an older woman who is not a slanderer? What are some of the characteristics of an older woman who is not a slave to some wine? Does Paul’s wording here mean that it’s acceptable for an older woman to be a slave to some wine? Why or why not?

Why did the older women need to teach what is good? Back in 1 Timothy, Paul said that women could not teach. How, then, could the older women teach? Why did the older women need to train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their husbands?

What might have been some of the best steps the older women could take to teach the young women? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who loves her husband? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who loves her children? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who is self-controlled? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who is pure? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who is working at home? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who is kind? What are some of the characteristics of a young woman who is submissive to her own husband? How does a young woman following godly character keep the word of God from being reviled?

Why did the younger men need to be self-controlled? What are some of the characteristics of a young man who is self-controlled? Why might the list for young men only include the one instruction of self-control?

Why did Titus need to be a model of good works, integrity in his teaching, dignity, sound speech? Why would Paul single out Titus and give him specific instructions? What are some of the characteristics of an evangelist who is a model of good works?

What are some of the characteristics of an evangelist who shows integrity in his teaching? Is it possible for an evangelist to teach without showing integrity? What are some of the characteristics of an evangelist who does not show integrity in his teaching?

What are some of the characteristics of an evangelist who shows dignity? What are some of the characteristics of an evangelist who demonstrates sound speech? Why can sound speech not be condemned? How can sound speech put an opponent to shame? How can sound speech leave an opponent with nothing evil to say?

Why did slaves need to be submissive to their own masters in everything, well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, and showing all good faith? What would have been some characteristics of slaves who were submissive to their own masters in everything? What would have been some of the characteristics of slaves who were well-pleasing? What would have been some of the characteristics of slaves who were not argumentative? What would have been some of the characteristics of slaves who were not pilfering? What would have been some of the characteristics of slaves who show all good faith? How could by behaving in this manner slaves adorn the doctrine of God? Are there any applications we can make from the discussion of slaves to today’s church?
