Sunday as the Lord's Day

Sunday as the Lord’s Day

The three Synoptics and John are unanimous in declaring that the women found Jesus’ tomb empty on “the first day of the week.”

  • Matthew 28:1-8.
  • Mark 16:1-8.
  • Luke 24:1-12.
  • John 20:1-10.

Notice that all four accounts are unanimous in declaring the tomb was discovered empty on “the first day of the week.” The day of the week isn’t named such as “Sunday,” but it is simply “the first day of the week.” That is going to be very important.

The early church—presumably because the Lord was resurrected on “the first day of the week”—met on “the first day of the week.” Acts 20:7. 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 (cf. 1 Corinthians 11:17-22).

“The Lord’s Day.” John “was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day” (Rev 1:10). The adjective “Lord’s” (it’s an adjective and not a possessive pronoun in Greek) only occurs in one other text in the entire Greek New Testament: 1 Corinthians 11:20.
