Starting and Ending My Day

Reading the Bible

Starting and Ending My Day

Once I’ve walked my dog, I sit down with my coffee and read a couple chapters of Scripture (I’m wrapping up the Gospel According to Mark at the moment). In the evening when I go to bed, before I start reading whatever horror novel I’m in at the moment, I read a couple chapters of Scripture. I personally like the symbolism of reading the Bible first thing in the morning and at night before I engage in any entertainment—I’m symbolically giving Scripture a pivotal role in my life and framing my days around the Word of God. Why do I spend time reading Scripture?

  • Scripture guides me in the darkness (Ps 119:105).
  • Scripture allows God to bless those who hear and obey it (Lk 11:28).
  • Scripture points me to Jesus (Jn 5:39).
  • Scripture will judge me at the last day (Jn 12:48; cf. Rev 20:12).
  • Scripture allows me to “believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God” (Jn 20:31).
  • Scripture allows me to “have life in his name” as the Word leads me to Jesus (Jn 20:31).
  • Scripture is God’s power to save (Rom 1:16).
  • Scripture makes my feet beautiful as I share the good news with others (Rom 10:15).
  • Scripture gives me hope (Rom 15:4).
  • Scripture makes me wise for salvation (2 Tim 3:15).
  • Scripture was breathed out by God himself (2 Tim 3:16).
  • Scripture is “living and active” (Heb 4:12).
  • Scripture endures forever (1 Pet 1:25; cf. Is 40:6-8).
  • Scripture allows me to grow into my salvation (1 Pet 2:2).
  • Scripture purifies me (1 Pet 1:22).
  • Scripture allows me to know I have eternal life (1 Jn 5:13).

Nothing in my life is more important than my study of Scripture. May you, too, spend serious time in the Word that you may be blessed!
