Remembering the Battle of Nuremberg, Germany



The Battle of Nuremberg, fought by the 3rd Infantry Division, saw some of the fiercest urban combat of World War II. The city of Nuremberg was an important symbol to the Nazi regime, and its fall marked a turning point in the war made possible by the Dogface Soldiers. As we approach the Army’s 250th birthday, we honor the largest branch of the military, its Soldiers, families and civilian counterparts, and to the sacrifices servicemembers post, past, and present have made for our country. In World War II soldiers faced the fiercest combat the world has ever seen while far away from home. On the eastern front between April 16th and April 20th, 1945, the US Army’s Third Infantry Division under Major General John W. O. Daniel in the 45th Infantry Division fought fiercely in the Battle of Nuremberg, a defining moment in World War II. As we approached the Army’s 250th birthday, we honor their bravery and sacrifice. This 5 day battle marked one of the. Fiercest urban combats of the world. American forces aim to seize control of Nuremberg, a vital stronghold of Adolf Hitler’s political power. Despite fierce resistance, 3rd ID forces and allies reached the center of the city in a ferocious battle leading to the Germany surrender at 11 a.m. that night. Third ID troops raised the American flag at Adolf Hitler’s fort in the center of Nuremberg. The Battle of Nuremberg stands as a critical moment in history symbolizing the decline of Nazi influence and the resilience of allied forces in their quest for victory. The 3rd Infantry division carries on its legacy and is still present in the European theaters today working with NATO allies to deter adversaries ready to respond to any threat and crisis along NATO’s eastern flank.
