Janet C. Wolfenbarger: At least some portion of a cadet wing were not particularly supportive of this change, to bring women into what had previously been an all-male institution. I actually thought about this, and it occurred to me that their real concern was the worry that, as a result of women being introduced, that somehow, the program and the standards associated with the Air Force Academy would have to be lowered with the women coming into that program. And I really do believe that I and the other women who were in my class and those that followed us spent four years proving that, in fact, the standards did not have to be lowered; that women could not only survive, but thrive in that very stressful environment.
