The Last American Killed in World War I


The National Archives holds the military records of World War I soldiers including Henry N. Gunther, who was killed in battle minutes before the Armistice was signed on November 11, 1918. This documentary explores the circumstances surrounding Gunther’s heroic yet tragic death, including visits to the National Archives and his burial site, both in Maryland. Archivist Mitch Yockelson shares some of the records related to his death and eventual repatriation and reburial in America.
